MI-1

The Soviets have always leaned heavily on the development of the helicopter. They now have some of the world’s smallest and the largest. The MI-1, one of the smaller types, was the first Russian helicopter to be placed into mass production.
Code named by N.A.T.O. forces as the Hare, the MI-1 helicopter made its appearance in 1950 and is still in production. The basic variant is a three-seater including the pilot’s seat. It has been used in many roles such as postal service, ambulance duty, and agricultural services.
The MI-1NKh introduced the allmetal rotor blades and is capable of operating under all weather conditions. The MI-3 is identical to the MI-1, except for the four-bladed main rotor instead of the three-bladed rotor.
The Hare is used by many of the Soviet Bloc countries in various military roles such as observation, sur-

The MI-1, code name Hare, in 1/100th scale from East Germany is not only petite in size but also in detail. This model represents a Hare in service with the Polish Air Force in the late 1960s. Construction is quite straight forward with good fit throughout the model. Care must be taken when placing the rotr blades into position. Also be sure that the landing gear is correctly aligned with the main fuselage. The clear parts are a little fuzzy but can be corrected by vacuforming a new canopy.

veillance and courier service. The model shown here depicts an MI-1 of the Polish Air Force.
An excellent kit of the MI-1 Hare has been recently produced in 1/100th scale by Modellbaukasten of East Germany. This and other kits from this manufacturer are available from W.R.W. Imports of Denver, Colo.
The kit is well molded and is devoid of any flash. The fit is excellent overall with only a minimum of sanding and filling required along the fuselage halves. Construction is quite straight forward and although the instruction sheet is in a variety of languages excluding English, the illustrations on the sheet are all that is necessary to build the model.
The interior of the model is somewhat sparse, but this can be remedied with a little ingenuity and parts from the scrap box. Overall, this is quite a jewel of a model with a touch of the unusual. This and models of other Russian aircraft always add a degree of excitement to any collection.
For the correct stance on the tricycle landing gear, the model must be weighted in the nose section. Lead fishing weights work quite well. Some sanding and filling was required on the long boom area for a more pleasing finish.

The model was painted Pactra Olive Drab. The uppermost surfaces along the boom and main body were oversprayed with a very light dust. This gives an appearance of slightly faded paint. All access panels, doors and vents were picked out with flat black or a thin dark grey wash. The rotor blade hub was painted Testor's Silver with a light wash of dirty thinner to pick out the detail. The rotor blades and tail blades were painted flat black.

The entire model was oversprayed with a light coat of Satin Finish. The Polish insignia and numerals were taken from a Final Finish sheet. The antenna was made from stretched plastic sprue. The tires were painted Imrie-Risley Black while the cockpit interior was finished in a dark grey with black instrument panel. The round vents located on the hull and main rotor body assembly were picked out in flat black.

The winch on the port side is not included in the kit and was fashioned from plastic scrap. The cable was stretched plastic sprue as is the foot-step just below the door. The cockpit interior was modified using miscellaneous spare parts from the scrap box.
