Tower of the Juche Idea

Juche is the guiding philosophy of the nation, and as such this tower, with its torch permanently shining across the capital, is a strong symbol to all North Koreans. Situated on the banks of the Taedong river, it was constructed in 1982 and standing 170 metres high. There is a lift to the summit which provides panoramic views across the capital.

Tower of the Juche Idea

This 170 metre (560 feet) structure sits on the banks of the Taedong River. It was erected in 1982 in honor of DPRK Eternal President Kim il Sung’s seventieth birthday. (There are seventy stones in the side for each year of President Kim’s life.) Juch’esong is the essential political philosophy of the DPRK, conceived by Kim il Sung and developed further by General Kim Jong il. Ju (chu) means master or lord and ch’e means the self, or the body. Hence, the literal translation one is likely to encounter is the Emersonian "self-reliance." The design of the tower was overseen by President Kim’s son, current DPRK leader, Kim Jong il. There are 500 tablets (second photo) laid under the Tower, with respectful words or slogans donated by President Kim’s allies and friends from around the world, a tribute and demonstration of President Kim’s international influence. According to the KCNA, 1.35 million people have visited the tower and surrounding park.

Okryu Bridge, Rungra Bridge and Rungrado May Day Stadium

Rungrado May Day Stadium

Located on Rungra Islet in the Taedong River, this stadium has a capacity of 150,000. It was officially completed 1 May 1989, originally as a sporting venue for the World Youth Festival, as well as the mass gymnastics and card shows [e.g., Ariang] for which the DPRK is famous. It is a mandatory destination for visitors to Pyongyang, including US Secretary of State Madeline Albright who was escorted there by General Kim Jong-il in her 1999 visit. The Rugrado May Day Stadium is the second (under certain parameters, such as use/purpose, the first) largest stadium in the world. The building at the bottom right is a swimming pool complex. There are also facilities for boat racing.
